Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Boston, MA, is seeking an outstanding attorney to succeed the founder as the new full-time Executive Director. VRLC works to ensure that every sexual assault victim in the United States has access to an attorney that will zealously advocate on her or his behalf to stabilize the victim’s life and try to ensure that even a single incident of sexual assault does not become a life sentence of declining social and economic productivity.
The Organization
Founded as the first law center in the nation dedicated solely to serving the legal needs of sexual assault victims, the Victim Rights Law Center advocates for sexual assault victims’ legal rights within the civil, academic and criminal justice systems. VRLC gives victims the free legal services they need through Center staff as well as pro bono attorneys. It also works to make the legal system more accessible and just by educating attorneys and other service providers throughout the country on the legal rights and remedies for victims. Through an innovative model of community collaboration, VRLC has created a network of allies dedicated to improving legal services for sexual assault victims. The Center engages in three strategic activities:
§ In the Commonwealth of MA, VRLC is pioneering an innovative model of direct legal services to sexual assault victims that provide holistic legal representation across a broad spectrum of legal needs, including: privacy, safety, primary and secondary education, employment, housing, immigration, financial compensation and criminal justice. In addition to Center staff attorneys, high quality legal services of the pro bono private bar are an integral part of the service model, as are close partnerships with the medical and counseling providers who serve sexual assault victims in MA.
§ Across the United States, VRLC is committed to being the catalyst that creates and trains a national cadre of non-profit and pro bono attorneys committed to zealously advocating for sexual assault victims on an individual basis.
§ Both within MA and across the Nation, VRLC is funded to provide legal technical assistance supporting rape crisis centers, statewide, national and tribal sexual assault coalitions, national law and policy organizations that are dedicated to advancing sexual assault victims’ substantive legal rights in the criminal, civil, administrative and academic arenas via legislation, policy and lobbying efforts. While not directly engaged in such policy and legislative efforts, VRLC is fully committed to supporting other institutions’ advocacy and litigation and believes such policy reform is also essential to the long-term advancement of sexual assault victims’ rights in the nation.VRLC has an annual operating budget of $1.2 million with $800,000 in kind and a staff of sixteen (eleven full-time and five part-time). Staff includes the Legal Director, National Director of Strategic Policy and Planning, Senior Attorneys, Staff Attorneys, a Development Officer and finance and administration professionals. Many dedicated volunteers enrich the services, and there is a national Board of Directors of eleven that works through an active Committee structure.
The Position: The Executive Director (ED) will provide overall leadership and be responsible for all aspects of VRLC’s operations. S/he will report to the Board of Directors and will follow the founding Executive Director. The ED will:
§ Embrace the vision and inspire national partners and staff to achieve the mission
§ Hire, motivate, supervise and evaluate the Operations Team including the Legal Director, National Director of Strategic Policy and Planning, Senior Administrator and Finance and Administration Officer
§ Manage external strategic relationships nationwide§ Manage strategic planning processes including development of function specific goals
§ Manage fundraising activities including private donor development and solicitation and foundation development and solicitation with assistance of part-time fundraising staff
§ Manage PR activities including the development of the annual report and newsletters
§ Work closely with the Board including all Committee Chairs. Ensure effective communications between Board and staff
§ Be fiscally responsible including presenting the annual budget to the board, monitoring revenue/expenses and financial controls and ensuring compliance with all grant requirements
Qualifications The Executive Director will be an experienced, entrepreneurial and well-respected leader who combines strategic vision, operational excellence, and financial management skills with proven fundraising ability. Excellent communication skills and a strong background in supervising and motivating staff are essential. The new ED must be a passionate and effective spokesperson for VRLC and the issues of sexual assault. S/he must develop a leadership presence and work in collaboration with national and community leaders and other organizations. The ideal candidate will offer many of the following attributes:
- J. D. degree and member of a bar
- Demonstrated commitment to providing access to justice for victims of sexual violence
- Knowledge of nonprofit management
- Ability to grow the organization’s visibility and impact
- Senior level experience successfully managing and evolving an organization, as well as a track record of successfully managing budgets and staff
- Demonstrated fundraising ability including major gift solicitation and grant writing
- Effective supervisor able to motivate staff and further their professional development
- Expertise in sexual assault issues
- Financial management skills and experience
- Leadership profile and presence
- Strong management, operations and program development skills
- Commitment to and knowledge of how to maximize both client and staff diversity
- Strong interpersonal and team-building skills
- Experience building partnerships
- Exceptional communication skills
- Residence in or ability to relocate to the Boston area
- Ability to travel nationally
